Matrix ry

History

The Mathematics Student Group Matrix ry is the student organization for mathematics students at the University of Helsinki. The organization's activities trace back to spring 1991 when the Mathematics Student Group was founded. The name Matrix was adopted on 1.3.1995 – a date that is now celebrated as Matrix's anniversary. Matrix was registered as an organization under HYY (the Student Union of the University of Helsinki) in 1997 and in the association register on 18.10.1999. Matrix currently has approximately 400 members.

Matrix's home is in Komero, located in room C338 on the third floor of Exactum. The name originates from the time when the Department of Mathematics (now the Department of Mathematics and Statistics) was still located in the city center campus, and students were given a space the size of a cleaning closet (closet = komero in finnish).

Honorary Members and Honorary sash

Honorary members of the association include Oscar Salonaho, who coined the name Matrix, and Tatu Suomi, who designed the Matrix logo, as approved in the spring meeting of 1999.

The Matrix honorary sash is awarded to individuals who have been pivotal forces in the organization with their contributions. The list of awarded sashes follows the order of grants.
